Hotspot Firmware Upgrade and Keypair Installation
Thanks for choosing HotSpotPA for your Internet WiFi hotspot!
The following information is intended for operators of HotSpotPA WiFi hotspot equipment.
If you are a hotspot customer,
please contact your local hotspot operator for assistance with setting up your computer or WiFi device.
The following steps are NOT necessary IF you purchased a pre-configured HotSpotPA router.
Update or "flash" your router firmware as follows:
- Download a copy of the WRT54GL hotspot firmware from download.hotspotpa.com
onto your laptop or computer.
- Connect the Ethernet port of your laptop or computer to LAN Port #1 on the back of your WRT54GL router.

- Start your browser, and enter http://192.168.1.1 into the brower's address bar.
- Log into your router using a blank username and a password of admin.
- Click on Administration
- Click on Firmware Upgrade

- Click the Browse button then locate and click on the HotSpotPA firmware file that you just downloaded.
- Click the Open button in the Browse dialog box.
- Click the Upgrade button.
- DO NOT disconnect or remove power from your router for about 5 minutes.
- When your router's front panel CISCO indicator starts to blink rapidly, the
firmware upgrade is complete.
Each hotspot router must have a unique VPN keypair installed.
If you use the same keypair on two or more routers,
none of your routers will be able to communicate with the HotSpotPA servers to process logins and payments.
If you are installing your own firmware,
please contact HotSpotPA to obtain a VPN keypair for each of your routers.
Routers purchased from HotSpotPA already have their VPN keypairs installed.
C10XXXXX.X.crt.txt is the VPN certificate part
of the keypair.
C10XXXXX.X.key.txt is the VPN key part of the
keypair.
Do not alter the contents of files containing your VPN keypair. The entire
contents of each file is required by your router. Altering your VPN files will
prevent your router from communicating with the HotSpotPA servers.
The certificate and key are loaded using the HotSpot/VPN page on your router's web interface as follows:
- After updating the firmware,
your PC should still be connected to LAN Port #1 on your router.
- Release and renew the DHCP address by disconnecting and reconnecting
the Ethernet cable between your computer and your router.
- Enter http://10.1.1.1 into the brower's address bar.
- Login using an ID of root and a password of hotspotpa.
- Click on Hotspot.
- Click on VPN.

- Click the Choose button to the right of Upload Client Cert,
then locate and click on the C10XXXXX.X.crt.txt file.
- Click the Open button in the Browse dialog box.
- Click the Save button in the lower right hand corner of the web page.
- Click the Choose button to the right of Upload Client Key,
then locate and click on the C10XXXXX.X.key.txt file.
- Click the Open button in the Browse dialog box.
- Click the Save button in the lower right hand corner of the web page.
- Click on Core.

- Change the Payment ID to your own payment ID (provided by HotSpotPA).
- Change the Device ID to something descriptive of your router,
like a number or the location where you will install it.
- In the lower right hand corner of the web page,
click Save Changes, then click Apply Changes.

- Reboot or power-cycle your router.
- All the remaining HotSpotPA router settings have default values that will work for most situations.
Please carefully read the description of each setting before attempting to make any changes.
